The VisualRecord Player

Can a book be not a book at all?If not a book, then what all forms could it be?

BRIEF

This is a classroom project for a Publication Design course which turned into more of a concept-based passion project of mine. Exploring the question “What all can a book be or do?” took me through the journey of ideas and concepts out of which I have carefully chosen one.

THE PROCESS

Among all the ideas I had, this one stuck: can a book preserve music and the culture around it? I'm an avid audiophile. For me, listening was never just about the tunes, but the meaning and message an artist is trying to communicate.

THE EXECUTION

It takes the form of a record player, part gramophone and part modern turntable, but plays no sound. Turn the page instead of dropping the needle, and an artist's story unfolds alongside their art, revealed piece by piece the way a record reveals itself track by track. Each edition is built around a single album, so the format itself becomes part of how that album gets told.
